Free lessons from our lab
Electrochemistry, explained with tools you can play with
Short lessons on the three-electrode cell, cyclic voltammetry and how to report electrocatalysis, with a CV simulator, an impedance playground and calculators that run in your browser.
Lessons
Each lesson takes 25 to 35 minutes and ends with a short quiz. Your progress is kept in this browser only.
The three-electrode cell and reference electrodes
What each electrode does, how to choose a reference and how to convert to the RHE scale.
Start → Lesson 2Cyclic voltammetry
Reading a CV, the Randles–Sevcik equation, and fast versus slow electron transfer.
Start → Lesson 3Reporting electrocatalysis properly
RHE, iR correction, ECSA, Tafel slopes, stability and Faradaic efficiency.
Start →For members of our lab
Lab safety and how to use our instruments
Rules, hazards and the instruments in our electrochemistry lab. Our lab may ask for it before you book a potentiostat.
Members area → Lesson 5 MembersStoring and caring for electrodes
Reference electrodes, glassy carbon, Pt and screen-printed electrodes, kept the way our lab does it.
Members area →Tools
Use them on their own, or alongside the lessons. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
CV simulator
Change scan rate, concentration, k⁰ and resistance, and watch the voltammogram and the diffusion layer respond.
Open → PlaygroundEIS playground
Build a circuit from Rs, Rct, CPE and Warburg elements and see the Nyquist and Bode plots form.
Open → CalculatorsFive calculators
Reference and RHE, iR correction, ECSA from Cdl, Tafel slope and Faradaic efficiency from GC.

The lessons are written by the Sustainable Electrochemical Science & Technology group at BRIN for our students and anyone starting out in electrochemistry. They draw on textbooks, tutorial papers and community guides, which are listed at the end of each lesson. The simulators use standard textbook models, so real cells will show effects they leave out.
Teachers are welcome to use the pages and tools in class. If you find an error or would like a topic covered, email angga.hermawan@brin.go.id.
